It’s April, which means we’re looking forward to World Creativity & Innovation Week starting April 15, which culminates in World Creativity & Innovation Day on April 21. And this year, we’re proud to share, creativity and innovation are even more front and center locally, as Governor JB Pritzker announced that April will be Innovation and Technology Month in the state of Illinois.
You know innovation and creativity are two of our fundamental goals at Catalyst Ranch, so this week we’re sharing a fun tool we make available to our Meeting clients that explores those two goals.
We have a veritable treasure chest full of activities and games that we make readily available to our clients, for the purpose of facilitating team building, ideation and more. One section of our collection we call Fuel Injectors, which energize teams with a little more meaning and connection than expected…
This tool is an activity we call “Convergence”. It’s no surprise that the word, convergence, is a hot topic in tech and data and science. Just like in practice in those fields, our activity models the creative process of taking disparate ideas and finding the overlap, even though—or especially when—that overlap may not be obvious. And valuable insight is found when you discover where that connection lies.
Here’s the activity:
Convergence
Fuel Injector, Ice Breaker. Approximate Time: 10 Min.
How it Works: The goal of this activity is to converge on a single word after starting with two random, unrelated words.
To play: Two people volunteer to start. They count down from 3 and then say one random word each. The first two people who think of a word related to both previous words say “Got it!” and say their words simultaneously after counting down from 3. Eventually, two people will say the same word, and the group has converged!
Take this Convergence activity to your team, and use it at the start your meeting or coming back from breaks. You’ll find yourselves excited to see what each next pair of folks thinks of, and joyful when a pair eventually lands on matching words.
