We’re happy to share the news that JK Entertainment has EXTENDED their exciting production of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH — now playing at Catalyst Ranch — through Sunday, August 2nd!
And while we’re celebrating their success, we have to share why we’re so keen on having them produce this show in our unexpected space…
While JK Entertainment is a relatively new company, they are kicking off their inaugural theatre season with remarkable flair and bold vision in their HEDWIG. And what impresses us here at Catalyst Ranch is the ingenuity, collaboration, and innovation we’ve witnessed in their mounting of this already ambitious musical. It’s these qualities that really earn audiences’ attention and respect, and which are hallmarks of great companies in the storied history of Chicago storefront theatre.
But there’s also a bonus for us: We’re particularly chuffed about how they use our Catalyst Studio space to great effect, adding a unique immersive layer to the show experience! In fact, director Arlo Kiss and the three core cast leads reveal a little about that in this engaging chat with Chicago news anchor and host Paul Lisnek for Lisnek’s Curtain Call Chicago podcast.
The video is worth checking out for insight into the show and their approaches to their characters, as well as the other big swings this show takes, including, most notably, their rotating cast assignments for the three main roles in the show. Talk about ambitious! This and the rest of their work has earned plenty of praise.
Paul Lisneck calls the cast and band a “Tour de Force” and observes that, because of the rotating roles, this show “feels less like a single artist’s story and more like a communal story about identity, personal damage, and the messy construction of wholeness.”
You have four more chances to catch this HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, which BroadwayWorld calls “undeniably moving.”
