Our meeting space, Catalyst Ranch, was designed to grease the wheels of important work and idea making. As such, we’re proud that we’ve been a destination not just for large businesses but also for nonprofit and community organizations. At the neighborhood level, there’s so much that can be done when minds come together to conceive, grow and refine new ideas.
This summer, a new project debuted in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood that exemplifies what’s possible when a community dreams up new avenues of civic investment.
Southside Sanctuary started as an idea conceived by two women, both South Side entrepreneurs. Cecilia Cuff, owner of the popular Bronzeville Winery, and business partner Jasmine Anwuli Michaels recognized the potential in a long vacant city lot at 47th Street and MLK Drive. Their vision, however, was not to build more enclosed, walled-off spaces like that of, say, retail storefronts; they knew that this expanse of weeds and concrete needed to become a versatile and usable space, one that was accessible to all the people of the community and embraced the open air of that lot, of that intersection, of Bronzeville itself.
After two years of development, funded by the city’s POP! (Public Outdoor Plaza) initiative, and with regular input from members of the neighborhood at large, South Side Sanctuary opened last month as a new gem of Bronzeville. The open space has grassy knolls for picnicking and lounging, a performance stage, open air classroom area and plenty of space for market stalls. Visitors can enjoy the Bronzeville Farmers Market there every Sunday, plus area businesses and practitioners offering classes for yoga, meditation and more.
There are so many aspects to this project that make our hearts sing. A green, nature-forward space! A dynamic gathering spot for all folks, filled with light and color and art! A community addition that actively involved and collaborated with area residents throughout development! And continuing programming for residents and business owners to come together under South Side Sanctuary’s four pillars: Integrative Wellness; Arts and Culture; Entrepreneurship and Innovation; and Sports and Recreation. It’s everything we love.
We at Catalyst Ranch commend the co-founders of this space for their vision, their team for engaging the community, and the city for championing new outdoor plazas to lift up Chicago’s communities. We’re so excited for the sprawling possibilities for culture and collaboration you all have opened up!
